Description. A perennial tall grass 30-60 cm high of the Cereals family, with a very extensive root system. Meadow fescue is a drought-resistant plant. It is characterized by high frost resistance, it is able to survive spring frosts and even severe frosts. The stems of the plant are smooth, sometimes rough under the panicle. Leaves are mostly radical, narrow, setaceous, of green, pale green or slightly gray color. It forms turfs. It retains 45-50% of young shoots in the green state in winter under the snow. Its inflorescence is of oblong shape, a thin panicle with divergent branches.
Fescue gives good growth during the first year of life, but generative shoots begin to appear only from the second year. In 2-3 years the plant grows up and can live about eight years.
In cultivated form, the crop is widely distributed in the European part of Russia, in the Caucasus, in Eastern and Western Siberia, as well as in Central Asia. The best conditions for fescue growing are forest zone, forest-steppe, forest-steppe belts of mountains.
Meadow fescue is widely distributed as a lawn crop, but it needs suitable conditions, since this plant can not be called unpretentious. In addition, such lawns require regular cuts, since a neglected area with high spreading spikelets becomes unattractive very quickly.
The plant is a good meadow fodder plant in the forest and, in part, forest-steppe zone. It is one of the best plants for pasture or haymaking grass mixtures. It is distinguished by high fodder value, its fodder quality is higher than timothy one, it resists grazing and haying well.
Application. Meadow fescue is often used in various lawn mixtures, composition of which depends on what their purpose in landscape design is. In this case, most often this herb is still used as the main plant.
Fescue meadow is used in universal, construction, road, sports lawns and for lawns, by means of which slopes and banks of water basins are grassed. It hardly fits for more decorative lawns, such as park or country ones, as it forms rigid bushy shoots that are separated from each other.
Besides, fescue is considered to be a valuable fodder plant, because it has a sufficiently high nutritional value. It is suitable for both forage of livestock and for grazing. Yield of hay is up to 50 centners / hectare. The rate of sowing of the meadow fescue is 8-15 kg / ha.
